AMD Quad Core CPU In 2007

AMD will introduce processors that will contain at least four cores and scale to up to 32 sockets by 2007. The processors will be coupled with chip sets that contain L3 cache; an improved memory technology, presumable Fully Buffered DIMM (FBDIMM); and HyperTransport 3.0 that will include support for fault tolerant I/O. Next year AMD plans to move to DDR 2 memory in its mobile and desktop platforms. The dual-core Turion should be sampling largely in the first quarter 2006 and in production by the second quarter 2006. By 2007 the company expects to offer quad core, improved cache performance, a new wireless technology, most likely Wi-Max. AMD will offer a reference mobile platform to OEMs and systems builders to help speed time to market. That platform will include chipsets with integrated graphics from ATI and NVIDIA as well as I/O.

以上大致上是说，AMD将在2007发表四核心的CPU，四核心的CPU会有L3快取还支援HT3.0
而明年也就是2006年发表的双核心CPU将支援DDR2，2007年之后会提供四核心的CPU。

2007 年 AMD 将会推出新的 quad-core 处理器将会支援 DDR3 并使用新版的 HypterTransport (应该指的是 HypterTransport 2.0)。

在 server 版本将会加上 L3 Cache，我想这应该是之前 AMD 提到的要在 crossbar switch 与 memory controller 间加上 L3 Cache，这个 cache 可能能够大大提升其他颗处理器要存取此 cpu memory 的性能，也使得新的 opteron 将由现在的 8 颗提升到 16 到 32 颗处理器。也使得不需要外部的电路来实现 32P opteron server，而目前 Newisys 的 Horus 虽然支援 32 颗 opteron 处理器，却需要特殊的设计。

2006 年 AMD opteron 将会支援 DDR2，并使用新的 M2 socket，新的 M2 将使用者能升级 2007 年的 quad-core 处理器。另外加上 Pacifica virtualization technology and its Presidio security technology。
另外 AMD 也致力于 compiler 与软体最佳化的问题，这是 intel 在许多 benchmark 上能够尝到甜头的主因，因为这些 compilter 通常都是以 SPECint2000, SPECfp2000 来做最佳化的目标，或许这是 intel p4 在 benchmark 上分数很高但真实世界软体惨败的原因之一。但很明显的 compiler 是 AMD 目前较缺乏的，虽然市面上也有些不错的 compiler 像是 GNU GCC、Pathscale EKO(源至于 SGIR/Cray compiler suite)与 PGI PGCC，但显然还是做得不够好，而在数学最佳化函式库则 AMD 早已提供。

M2 socket 也是 939 pin, 不过是完全不一样的脚位定义..
